Bill Belichick, one of the most accomplished coaches in NFL history, has been named the new head football coach at the University of North Carolina. UNC Athletics announced the five-year agreement Wednesday evening, following approval by the UNC Board of Trustees. Belichick, an eight-time Super Bowl champion, expressed enthusiasm about the move, citing his lifelong connection to college football through his late father, Steve Belichick, who coached at UNC in the 1950s.
“This is an exciting day for Carolina football and our University,” said UNC chancellor Lee H. Roberts in a press release. “Carolina is committed to excellence and to creating an opportunity to succeed in everything we do, from the classroom to the field of competition. I know after speaking with Coach Belichick that he shares that commitment. His legacy speaks for itself, and we look forward to working together on the next chapter of Carolina football.”
With 333 career NFL wins and six Super Bowl titles as the head coach of the New England Patriots, Belichick is known for his tactical mastery and leadership. He also won two Super Bowls as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator. The 71-year-old coach, a three-time AP NFL Coach of the Year, is set to bring his wealth of experience to Chapel Hill as he aims to elevate the Tar Heels’ football program.
Belichick’s ties to North Carolina include his father’s tenure as a Tar Heels assistant coach and his early exposure to football strategy at the U.S. Naval Academy. A Wesleyan University graduate, Belichick emphasized his excitement to embrace college coaching and build a winning tradition at UNC. A formal press conference to introduce him is expected soon.
