A powerful line of thunderstorms swept through the Charlotte region this morning, uprooting trees, knocking out power for thousands, and potentially touching down a tornado in Union County.
Emergency responders are assessing the storm’s impact specifically along Friendly Baptist Church Road in Unionville, where reports indicate structural damage and the strong likelihood of a tornado touchdown.
Union County Emergency Management activated its emergency operations center to coordinate response efforts. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time.
There are currently over 14,000 Duke customers without power, according to their outage map.
Historical National Weather Service data shows Union County has experienced strong tornadoes before, including EF-4 storms in 1920 and 1989.
While today’s system was weaker, officials warn that severe weather remains a risk for the region. Updates will be provided as assessments continue.
