NC Lawmakers Attempting to Raise The Speed Limit Across The State

A bipartisan group of North Carolina lawmakers are attempting to increase the state’s maximum speed limit.

NC House Bill 112 seeks to raise speed limits from 70 to 75 mph on sections of Interstates 40, 95, and 87. Supporters argue the change would save travel time, while critics warn it could increase crash risks, particularly on I-40.

The bill also proposes raising the threshold for serious speeding charges from 80 to 85 mph on interstates and highways.

If passed, speed limits would not change until new signage is installed.

A House committee is currently reviewing the measure.
