Drivers in Charlotte are spotting new billboards that aren’t advertising restaurants or businesses, but actually, part of a foreign country’s PR campaign against President Trump’s trade tariffs.
The billboards, which feature bold messages opposing U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, are funded by the Canadian government.
According to Global Affairs Canada, the signs are meant to raise awareness among Americans about the economic consequences of trade war.
Pictures of the billboards are now going viral all over the internet, with one post on Reddit with over 14,000 upvotes and more than 500 comments. The campaign is currently active in key swing states such as Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and now North Carolina.
The effort stems from U.S. tariffs that include a 25% duty on Canadian steel and aluminum and potential tariffs on Canadian automotive imports. Canadian officials say the campaign aims to highlight how these trade policies could negatively impact jobs, prices, and economic ties between the two countries.
