Major School Bus Crash on I-77 Near Charlotte Shuts Down Highway

A Lexington County School District 2 bus flipped on I-77 South Thursday after a tire blew out, injuring 21 students, with 5 in critical condition and 1 tragically passing away since the accident.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. near mile marker 55, just south of Charlotte. The bus was one of three carrying Pine Ridge Middle School students home from a field trip.

According to WSOC, the bus was carrying 2 adults and 35 students.

According to the Chester County Sheriff’s Dept, the bus was one of three other Lexington County School District 2 busses travelling from an 8th grade field trip just outside of Charlotte, NC.

Southbound lanes remained closed Thursday evening.
