Carolinas Tax Deadline Extended to May 1, 2025, Due to Hurricane Helene

2474

Taxpayers in North and South Carolina now have until May 1, 2025, to file their federal and state tax returns, following deadline extensions granted in response to Hurricane Helene.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR), and North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) all announced the delay, moving the usual April 15 deadline back more than two weeks to allow additional time for individuals and businesses affected by the storm.

Automatic Relief Across Both States

Eligible taxpayers do not need to take any action to receive the extension. The new deadline applies to:

  • Federal and state income tax filings and payments due between September 25, 2024, and May 1, 2025

  • Licenses and returns originally due during that same time frame

  • Calendar year 2024 North Carolina income tax returns, typically due April 15, now extended without penalty if filed and paid by May 1

Both states will remove late action penalties for affected filings and payments submitted by the May deadline. However, North Carolina reminds taxpayers that penalty relief beyond May 1 may still be available under the state’s Penalty Waiver Policy, depending on individual circumstances.

The extension follows severe impacts from Hurricane Helene and aims to reduce administrative burdens during recovery.
