As snow blankets North Carolina, crashes have surged across major and secondary roads. In Orange County, officials confirmed one fatality in a 53-vehicle crash on I-40 West near mile marker 259.
According to NCSHP, two separate collisions on I-40 and I-85 caused traffic to back up, leading to multiple rear-end crashes. A tractor-trailer struck a vehicle from behind, triggering a deadly chain reaction. The wreck blocked I-40, with at least three additional multi-vehicle crashes occurring behind it. Several others sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Orange Rural Fire Department.
WOW! Raleigh has always had bad drivers that just don’t slow down when the roads get slick from snow and ice. Here is a 50-car pileup on I-40, just one of several multi-car accidents today. https://t.co/0raDaCB1BW

Roads around Charlotte aren’t quite as bad as up in Raleigh, but along the northern sections of our city, the accident count is also piling up.
Police are warning all drivers to use extreme caution for the rest of the day today if you have to drive.
