Less than two years after being renamed Fort Liberty, North Carolina’s largest Army base will revert back to Fort Bragg. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the change on February 10, honoring a different Bragg this time.

Instead of Confederate leader Gen. Braxton Bragg, the base will now commemorate Roland L. Bragg, a private first class who fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Fort Bragg’s previous renaming followed a 2021 congressional mandate to remove Confederate names from military bases. Although former President Donald Trump vetoed the measure, Congress overrode the veto, making it law.

In a video Hegseth posted yesterday, he states, “That’s right, Bragg is back”
