Trump Nominates Charlotte-Area Congressman Dan Bishop As OMB Director

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) as deputy budget director at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Bishop, 60, who has represented Charlotte’s 9th district in Congress since 2019, will not return to Congress next year following his unsuccessful bid for North Carolina attorney general. Democrat Jeff Jackson narrowly defeated him in that race.

Before Congress, Bishop gained prominence as the author of North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2, aka the “bathroom bill“, which restricted transgender individuals’ bathroom use and faced widespread backlash. During his time in Washington, Bishop joined the conservative House Freedom Caucus, where he was elected to leadership and advocated for hardline fiscal policies.

President-elect Trump made the following announcement about Bishop on his website:

In addition to Bishop’s nomination, Trump named Ed Martin as the next chief of staff for the OMB.

Both appointments signal early efforts to shape Trump’s fiscal agenda for his incoming administration.
