The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro has claimed the top spot in Newsweek’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards, surpassing renowned competitors like the Bronx Zoo and the San Diego Zoo.
This recognition comes as the zoo celebrates its 50th anniversary, marked by new installations and significant expansions.
“From the Endangered Species Carousel and Air Hike Ropes Course to zookeeper talks and guided golf-cart tours, there’s a lot to experience at the North Carolina Zoo,” Newsweek said in their report. “A Zoofari trip will take you onto a 40-acre expanse for a free-roaming look at rhinos, ostriches and herding animals. And, of course, you can explore all the animal exhibits, from the tiny desert pupfish to the African elephant.”
To honor its milestone year, the zoo installed sculptures of Tort and Retort, the first Galapagos tortoises to arrive at the park. Additionally, the zoo is planning to expand its Asia Continent exhibit, which will feature new animals, unique viewpoints, and family-friendly event spaces.
The North Carolina Zoo also recently expanded by 139 acres. This expansion of their Ridges Mountain Nature Preserve was supported by The NC Conservation Fund, the North Carolina Land and Water Fund, and philanthropists Fred, Alice, Brad, and Shelli Stanback.
The preserve provides critical habitat for various wildlife, including bobcats, deer, and numerous bird species. With this latest addition, the North Carolina Zoo now manages 2,805 acres of land, solidifying its role as a leader in conservation and education.
