North Carolina Secures 3rd Place Nationally in Net Migration

2015

The pandemic opened up the floodgates of interstate mobility, reaching an all-time-high in 2022. While for some states this translates into an exodus, others emerge as magnet states that do a great job at both attracting and retaining residents.

The data team at StorageCafe conducted an analysis ranking all 50 states and Washington, D.C., by net migration to see who’s winning the migration game and what’s making them great places to call home.

According to the report, North Carolina stands out as a migration powerhouse, taking third place nationwide with an impressive net influx of nearly 79,000 people.

Here’s a quick glance at some of the findings emerging from the study:

  • One of the major draws of NC is the housing market, with the median home value standing at $277,000 — significantly below the national benchmark. Approximately 40% of newcomers to NC become homeowners in their first year of residence in the state.
  • Newcomers bring in a moderately higher income than the state’s average, and an impressive 38% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Virginia, Florida and South Carolina are the top three originating states sending people to North Carolina.
  • In 2022, 36,000 people moved from Virginia to North Carolina, and 31,500 came in from Florida. On both routes, almost half (about 47%) achieved homeownership within a year, thanks to North Carolina’s 20% lower home prices compared to the transplants’ states of origin.
