The City of Belmont just dumped nearly 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into the South Fork River this week after heavy rainfall overwhelmed their treatment system.
North Carolina General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143-215.1C required them to issue a public statement when these types of discharges occur.
Here is their public statement:
“The City of Belmont had an incident where untreated wastewater was discharged into North Carolina surface waters. The discharge incident was the result of heavy rains on the morning of December 26, 2023, which overloaded a City of Belmont wastewater lift station. The address of the discharge is 2021 Oaks Parkway, and the overflow affects the South Fork River.
The discharge at 2021 Oaks Parkway is estimated at approximately 9,900 gallons. Overflow cleaning, repairs, and inspections were performed by the City of Belmont’s Water Distribution and Collections Division of the Public Works Department.”
