As artificial intelligence (AI) has seamlessly integrated into many of our lives, assisting with organization, navigation, shopping, and personal reminders, we looked at the innovative path that led to this moment. The latest CommercialCafe report analyzed AI and machine learning (ML) patent activity in the U.S. and highlighted which companies have been the most prolific contributors so far and mapped the 25 most AI-innovative metros in the country.
Here are some of the key highlights:
- With 404 AI patents, the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area placed 17th among the country’s most innovative metros.
- About half of that total (203 patents) were patents obtained for innovation in machine learning.
- Charlotte city proper stood out as one of the most innovative in the Southern U.S. region, with tech inventors here earning 372 of the AI patents grated across the metro area — roughly 92% of patent grants in the Charlotte MSA.
Other notable takeaways include:
- IBM, Microsoft, and Google are leading the race in terms of AI patent grants.
- Overall, 4,980 entities had obtained at least one AI and ML patent in the U.S. by the end of 2022. The number of patents granted increased significantly after 2010 before shooting up from 2019 through 2021.
