Charlotte’s Scott Clark Toyota is supporting future automotive technicians through a partnership with Central Academy of Technology & Arts (CATA) in Union County. In an effort to include career exploration with electric vehicles, the dealership will donate the first hybrid car – a Toyota Prius – to the school’s automotive program during a presentation on July 26 at 1 p.m. on the CATA campus in Monroe.

“With sales of hybrid and electric vehicles on the rise, it is important that emerging automotive technicians grow in the field with hands-on experience,” said Rod Godall, director of community engagement at Scott Clark Toyota. “We are excited to partner with CATA while watching students as they experience new technologies early in their prospective careers.”

As automakers increase production of electric and hybrid vehicles, a skilled workforce will be necessary to keep up with the rapidly growing sophistication of automotive technology. The donated Toyota Prius will be used as part of advanced studies courses offered at the school. High school sophomores and juniors with an interest in automotive careers will have the opportunity to learn using the hybrid vehicles beginning this fall as part of CATA’s Transportation Systems Academy. Students will learn components of the hybrid drivetrain, use special tools needed to work on hybrid and electric vehicles, and learn safety aspects of working on EV/hybrid drivetrain.

“We hope students will come away with a basic understanding of hybrid and electric vehicles,” said Kevin Beals, principal at CATA. “With the help of Scott Clark, our automotive students will be better prepared for the new opportunities and careers associated with these new technologies.”
