$16 Million Futuristic Pedestrian Bridge Set To Unite Uptown and South End

2046

The City of Charlotte approved a long-anticipated contract to start construction on a pedestrian bridge connecting Uptown and South End.

The council recently approved a $16 million construction contract with Blythe Construction, Inc., bringing the transformative project closer to reality after years of delays.

The pedestrian bridge will span 280 feet across Interstate 277, connecting the CATS Brooklyn Village Station in Council District 1. Designed as a 16-foot-wide concrete path, it will accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists, offering a safer, seamless link along the Rail Trail. The project aims to unite two of Charlotte’s most vibrant neighborhoods, enhancing connectivity while reducing competition for nightlife and office tenants.

Work will also include grading and retaining wall construction to support the bridge’s infrastructure. Once completed, it will offer direct access between Center City and South End, improving safety and accessibility for Rail Trail users.

Funding for the project comes from a collaboration among the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), Mecklenburg County, and private contributors. Following an Invitation to Bid issued on October 24, 2024, four bids were received, and Blythe Construction emerged as the lowest responsive, responsible bidder.

NCDOT must review and approve the contract before construction can begin. According to the city council agenda, the bridge is now expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2028.
